Interactive Design for a Pet Car
In recent years, China's pet economy has experienced rapid growth, with higher standards of pet services and an increase in pet travel, particularly among younger generations who view pet ownership as an alternative to having children. In collaboration with transportation design experts, our project developed the "WoofWheel" car interior and interaction system for a 2040 multifunctional vehicle, designed specifically for young dog owners traveling with multiple dogs.
The interior materials should possess characteristics that prevent hair shedding, adhesion, and resist pet chewing. Additionally, the design should incorporate anti-vomit pads and include feeding devices that are easy to detach and are spill-proof.
It is essential to ensure that the vehicle's control buttons are designed to prevent accidental activation by pets. The car should be equipped with common medications for dogs, such as remedies for motion sickness, diarrhea, and injuries, for emergency use. Additionally, the vehicle must be outfitted with an efficient ventilation system to maintain air circulation.
The design should take into account the comfort and freedom of interaction between humans and dogs; cater to the needs for pet toys; provide facilities for photography; and ensure the suitability of both private and open spaces for shared use by humans and their canine companions.
The interactive features of "Woofwheel" span both the onboard system and mobile devices. The following diagram illustrates only a portion of the mobile UI interface.
When designing the interior space of the vehicle, we considered the following factors: In-car monitoring to ensure the safety of pets left alone in the vehicle; a horizontally extended bench and specialized dog mats provide a comfortable resting space for both humans and dogs during travel; flexible transitions between privacy and openness during human-dog interactions; and the integration of semi-autonomous driving technology developed by 2040.
