An Alexander McQueen Memorial Exhibition
This exhibition design marks a new attempt in my "Exhibition Design" course at the academy. Having never previously worked in exhibition design, this opportunity is both challenging and exciting for me. For the theme of this design, I have conceptualized it as a memorial exhibition for the British fashion designer Alexander McQueen.
McQueen's impact extends beyond fashion; his true influence lies in shaping viewers' perceptions of the world, societal issues, and his era through powerful art. This brilliance, rooted in his painful life journey, reflects his deep empathy. The exhibition will explore McQueen's life, revealing the "recklessness," "pain," "struggle," "fear," and "anger" behind his creations, while also interpreting his fashion ideas and humanistic concerns. Understanding the experiences and philosophies behind his work will deepen our appreciation of McQueen's significance in fashion and beyond.
The Caged Bird, Why Do You Sing So Loudly? McQueen had a deep affinity for birds, drawn to their freedom and grace. Bird imagery appeared in almost every fashion show, symbolizing his own life—lured into a cage by capitalism, singing loudly until his death. While we admire the bird's song, we often overlook the sorrow behind it. This exhibition will highlight both the beauty of the bird’s song and the motivations behind it, exploring the eternal value and "immortal soul" beneath its melody.
Using "Theatrical Play" and "Maze" as the main concepts, the exhibition is divided into seven parts: Prologue, Act One, Act Two, ... Act Five, and Epilogue. Each scene represents a different stage of McQueen's life, guiding viewers through the emotional whirlpool and philosophical beliefs deep within McQueen, starting an immersive journey of discovery.
In addition to showcasing McQueen's iconic fashion pieces, photos, and videos, the exhibition will also feature some of his unconventional art forms, such as stage performances, digital art, and photography. To deepen the audience's understanding of McQueen's life journey, personal items such as design sketches, notebooks, videotapes, and collectibles will also be displayed.
The exhibition will recreate key artistic installations from McQueen's runway shows to help the audience grasp his artistic expression and concepts. Performance art and installations were vital in many of his shows. Cinematic, immersive techniques will enable the audience to deeply experience and connect with his work, ensuring lasting impact and commemoration.
